Best Practices/Tips for Success

Create effective and high-quality recordings for your students by following recording best practices.

General Recording Tips

  • Give yourself time to setup the equipment or device(s) you are using to ensure everything is prepared and working properly.
  • Familiarize yourself with the recording software you are using.
  • Check your check audio, video, and presentation content with a quick test recording.
  • Avoid distractions like chewing gum or food while recording.
  • Focus the camera directly on your content to guide the attention of your audience.
  • Annotate your slides to allow students to easily follow your lecture and stay engaged.

Recording in the Classroom

  • For manual recordings, please use Panopto to record a video on the classroom’s Windows computer. 
  • For automatic recordings, please be mindful of the recording schedule and plan lectures or announcements accordingly. 
  • Repeat student questions for clarity in the recording. 
  • Use electronic tools such as the document camera or a tablet as classroom cameras may not capture whiteboard content clearly. 
  • Mute or turn off the classroom microphone during private conversations.

Recording from Home or Office

  • Close your windows and door to maintain a quiet environment.
  • Consider placing a “Recording in progress” note on your door.
  • Silence your cell phone and avoid sitting next to an office phone that may ring to reduce distractions. 
  • Mute or turn off any sound coming from a music device, TV, radio, or similar.
  • A headset microphone is preferred, users without headsets should be sure to record in a quiet area to prevent background noise.
  • Close any computer applications that you are not utilizing in your recording.
  • Avoid using more than one application at a time while recording as increased computer activity may affect audio and video quality.
  • Temporarily disable notifications that may appear during a recording including email pop-ups, messages, calendar events, and more.
  • If recording with video, sit in a well-lit area and wear solid-colored clothing as patterned clothing may affect video quality.
  • If recording with video, clear your surroundings of distracting objects that may distract your audience.
