Biography

Michael is the Assistant Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Washington State University (WSU), where he leads enterprise-wide cybersecurity strategy, governance, and risk management. He is dedicated to strengthening the university’s security posture, ensuring resilience against emerging threats, and aligning security initiatives with institutional goals.

Michael joined WSU in 2013 as ITS Manager for Voice and Data Systems, where he played a key role in modernizing network and telecommunications security. Recognized for his leadership and technical acumen, he transitioned to Manager of Security Operations in 2015, leading the development of a best-in-class Security Operations Center (SOC). Under his leadership, WSU significantly reduced security incidents, improved threat detection capabilities, and enhanced the institution’s cybersecurity infrastructure. His success in this role led to his promotion to Deputy CISO, and in July 2022, he was appointed CISO, where he now oversees the university’s entire security strategy.

Prior to WSU, Michael served 20 years in the U.S. Navy, holding multiple leadership positions in information security and technology management. His military experience provided a strong foundation in risk management, intelligence operations, and strategic defense—skills that now drive WSU’s cybersecurity program forward.

Michael holds a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics and an M.S. in Information Security Assurance, along with multiple industry-recognized cybersecurity certifications. Known for his strategic vision, innovative security frameworks, and ability to communicate complex risks to leadership, he continues to advance WSU’s cybersecurity initiatives, ensuring the university remains at the forefront of higher education security excellence.
