Unverified Sender Banner in Outlook Mobile, August 2025

Please see the following scheduled Information Technology Services (ITS) maintenance process:

Date: Between mid-July 2025 and mid-August 2025 (An exact implementation date for WSU’s Microsoft environment is unavailable.)

The following work is being completed: Microsoft is introducing a new unverified sender banner in the reading pane of Outlook for iOS and Android.

All affected groups: WSU Outlook Mobile users

All affected processes: When a WSU user receives a message from an unverified sender, Outlook Mobile will display a banner in the reading pane explaining why Microsoft flagged the sender and warning of potential impersonation.

Duration of impact: This is a permanent, Microsoft-driven change.

Additional information:

  • This will align with functionality already available in Outlook for desktop and web.
  • This will complement existing safety messages like “External sender,” “Not on safe senders list,” and “You don’t often get email from this sender.”

Necessary follow-up steps: WSU users are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious messages to abuse@wsu.edu.
