Update to Default File Opening Preference in Microsoft Teams

Please see the following scheduled Microsoft change:

Date: May 2026 (An exact implementation date for WSU’s Microsoft environment is not available.)

The following work is being completed: Microsoft is updating the default file open preference in Teams for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. Users who previously selected Teams as their default file opening option will now default to the desktop app or web app instead.

All affected groups: Users who set Teams as their default app for opening Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files

All affected processes:

  • The default file open preference will change from Teams to Desktop app or Web app.
  • There is no change to file storage location or permissions.

Duration of impact: This is a permanent, Microsoft-driven change.

Necessary follow-up steps: Impacted users can manually change their file open preference back to Teams at any time from their Teams settings.
