The following work is being completed: Microsoft is replacing an expiring licensing certificate used by Microsoft 365 apps on Mac, iOS, and iPadOS devices. Microsoft 365 apps on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS must be updated by July 13 to avoid entering read-only mode due to certificate expiration.
All affected groups: Users accessing Microsoft 365 apps on Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices
All affected processes:
- Microsoft 365 app versions and devices that meet the following requirements include the updated certificate and will continue to function normally:
- Mac:
- macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
- Microsoft 365 app version 16.83 or later
- iOS/iPadOS:
- iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later
- Microsoft 365 app version 2.93 or later
- If either the Microsoft 365 app version or device operating system is unsupported, Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote) will enter read-only mode. No data loss is expected.
- In read‑only mode, users will be able to:
- View documents
- Print documents
- Users will be unable to:
- Edit files
- Create new documents
- Save changes
- In read‑only mode, users will be able to:
- Mac:
- No impact to Windows or Android devices is expected.
Duration of impact: This is a permanent, Microsoft-driven change.
Necessary follow-up steps:
- End-Users:
- Manually verify your Microsoft 365 app version, macOS, or iOS/iPadOS.
- Upgrade devices to a supported Microsoft 365 app version and operating system before July 13 to maintain full functionality.
- Utilize Microsoft 365 on the web as an alternative.
- Support Teams:
- Identify WSU‑managed Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices currently running unsupported Microsoft 365 app versions or operating systems.
- Plan, schedule, and complete device updates ahead of July 13.
