WSU VPN Migration to Seattle TierPoint Firewalls, 12/17

Please see the following scheduled Information Technology Services (ITS) maintenance process:

Date: Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025

Start Time: 8 p.m.

End Time: 11:59 p.m.

The following work is being completed: As part of the Palo Alto Firewall Support renewal, ITS is migrating VPN services to the Seattle TierPoint firewalls.

All affected groups: WSU VPN users

All affected processes:

  • VPN Outage:
    • Users may be unable to connect to WSU VPN services for up to one hour during this maintenance window.
  • Unified VPN Portal:
    • ITS is decommissioning all campus-specific VPN portals:
      • vpn.everett.wsu.edu (WSU Everett)
      • sslvpn.spokane.wsu.edu (WSU Spokane)
      • vpn.vancouver.wsu.edu (WSU Vancouver)
      • vpn.tricity.wsu.edu (WSU Tri-Cities)
  • Private IP Address Change:
    • Users at WSU Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, and Everett will receive a new private IP address when connecting to vpn.wsu.edu. As a result, access to select internal WSU systems may be impacted for these campuses.
  • NAT IP Address Change:
    • All users will receive a new NAT IP when connecting to vpn.wsu.edu. As a result, access to select external systems may be impacted.
  • Whitelists:
    • Updates may be required for systems such as servers, databases, or remote desktop environments that restrict access based on IP addresses.
    • Updates may be required for access lists that your areas maintain for internal access.
    • Coordination with external partners or vendors may also be required to ensure the new IP addresses are added to their approved whitelists for their systems.

Duration of impact: ITS is reserving the entire maintenance window to complete this work. An outage of up to one hour for WSU VPN services is expected during the maintenance window. All portal name and IP address changes are permanent.

Necessary steps:

  • To Complete Before Maintenance Window:
    • Please review a complete list of current VPN IPs, along with their new configurations, that will apply to users connecting to vpn.wsu.edu: VPN Mappings for VPN Service Migration
      • Please Note: If you do not have permission to view this resource, or would like specific guidance for your area, please submit a ticket to crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu.
    • Please work with your areas or external vendors to update all relevant access lists or whitelists to allow both the current and new IP addresses to prevent service disruptions.
  • To Complete After Maintenance Window:
    • All WSU users must connect via the vpn.wsu.edu portal.

Additional information: ITS is distributing the attached communication to all WSU employees on Tuesday, Nov. 4, regarding these scheduled VPN changes.
