New WSU University-Wide Password Policy

Effective immediately on Wednesday, Dec. 4, Washington State University (WSU) no longer requires most members of the WSU community to update their passwords every 180 days

Key Changes:

  • After completing one final password change, WSU faculty, staff, and students will no longer be required to update their network passwords.
  • The minimum password length requirement has been increased from 10 to 15 characters.
  • While periodic password updates are no longer mandatory, users still have the option to change their passwords at any time.

Action Required:

To transition to the new password policy, all users must complete one final password update. This can be done at any time within your current 180-day update window. However, we recommend that you update your password sooner to ensure compliance with the new policy.

Instructions for Updating Your Password:

  1. Sign in to account.wsu.edu with your current WSU username and password.
  2. Select Manage security methods.
  3. In the Password section, select Update.
  4. When prompted to reset your password enrollment, select Yes.
  5. Complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and enter your current password to proceed.
  6. You will be redirected to a page where you can enter your new password.

Exceptions:

Certain university groups, due to regulatory and security requirements, may require a password expiration policy.
