The following work is being completed: ITS is implementing an email filter in ProofPoint to prevent authenticated SMTP messages from being sent using @email.wsu.edu addresses. With the filter enabled, messages sent using a sender address in the email.wsu.edu domain will be discarded. This change follows recent abuse by external actors using the @email.wsu.edu alias with compromised accounts.
All affected groups: Legitimate WSU senders or services that send emails through SMTP using the email.wsu.edu domain. During auditing of messages over greater than a month, no legitimate messages were sent from this domain.
All affected processes: WSU’s ProofPoint email filter for authenticated SMTP traffic
Duration of impact: No service outage or disruption is expected, but the entire maintenance window is expected for this work.
