Actively enrolled students and faculty/staff can get their Office 365 software subscription here.
Microsoft Imagine is now Azure Dev Tools for Teaching
The Microsoft Imagine program continues to evolve. Effective February 13, 2019 the Microsoft Imagine program has been renamed Azure Dev Tools for Teaching. Software previously available through the Microsoft Imagine Premium program will still be available to students who are currently enrolled in a designated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) course per the terms of the Microsoft Azure program. Microsoft Standard will also continue to be available to all WSU students, faculty and staff through the Microsoft Azure program.
Program agreements are valid from June 30th of each year through July 1, of the following year. It is not guaranteed that the agreement will be renewed after the July 1st end date of the program agreement.
STUDENTS
The selection of Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (formerly Microsoft Imagine Premium) software is available to WSU students who are currently enrolled in a WSU STEM course, regardless of major. When enrolled in these courses, students may download the available software to their personal laptop or desktop from Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching. The license is a perpetual, non-commercial use license so students are allowed to use the software legally after school ends and even after they graduate as long as it is not for commercial purposes.
FACULTY
Microsoft Azure software is also available to faculty who are currently teaching a WSU STEM course. Faculty may download the available software to their personal laptop or desktop from Microsoft Azure. Please be aware that while Azure software cannot be installed on individual staff or faculty WSU owned computers, for lab situations in support of education the software from Imagine can be utilized in computer labs.
MICROSOFT AZURE (FORMERLY MICROSOFT IMAGINE)
Antivirus (AV) Software
University policy requires that computers on WSU’s network be protected by antivirus software at all times. (Executive Policy #14)
Free Anti-Virus clients are available for various operating systems (OS). However, most privately-owned machines come pre-installed with an AV client. If you chose to utilize a free client, un-install the pre-installed client before deploying the free client.
Windows OS
Faculty, Staff and Students – There are free AV clients such as Windows Defender/Security Essentials available.
Apple/MAC OS
There are free AV clients such as Sophos Antivirus available.
UNIX/Linux OS
There are free AV clients such as ClamAV available.
Departmental Software
Departments needing software for the purpose of maintaining their daily operational infrastructure on university machines, can be obtained through the site licensing program. For more information, refer to: Software Site Licensing.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Software
Required for transferring files
FTP Client
We recommend either the current release of the secure FTP client FileZilla – http://filezilla-project.org/ or BlueZone Secure FTP client – http://www.bluezonesoftware.com/. Both products are freely available and have a history of good support. Both products have proven their ability to connect to the mainframe using the secure SSL FTP protocol. Both products also support TLS and SSH.
MOVEit Freely http://www.ipswitchft.com/Business/Products/MoveitFreely/ is a free command line FTP/secure FTP SSL (FTPS) client for Windows Vista Business Edition, 2003, XP, 2000, ME Win 7, 8.0, 8.1 and NT 4.0 systems. Not Windows10. This utility is available as one possible choice for converting existing FTP command strings to secure FTP.
FTP Server
Many FTP servers work well. We have had success with the freeware FTP server by FileZilla http://filezilla-project.org/ . FTP servers must support the SSL FTP protocol at a minimum of 128-bit encryption.
SSH-Secure Shell
If you are using a Windows system, download and install a copy of SSH client software. Several common freely available products are listed here: http://www.putty.org
For Apple, Linux and other UNIX users, the SSH program is built in.
Teaching & Research Lab Software
Departmental labs whose purpose is to teach how to use Microsoft products or that use a Microsoft product for research may be eligible for lab use software. Please contact Crimson Service Desk for more information and program restrictions.
TN3270 Software
Required for connecting/uploading/downloading to WSU mainframe/AIS application.
TN3270 Client
Many TN3270 clients will work when connecting to Administrative Information Systems (AIS). The only requirement is that the client must establish a secure connection.
For Windows clients we recommend purchasing QWS3270 Secure from Jolly Giant. This client provides secure TN3270 connections to the mainframe and has additional functionality that allows it to work better in our networking environment compared to freeware TN3270 alternatives.
For Mac clients we recommend TN3270 X from Brown University This client is free and provides secure TN3270 connections to the mainframe
BUD – Upload and Download AIS Files
Many AIS applications have file upload and/or download capabilities. These file uploads and downloads are dependent on a specific TN3270 client to work. Now with the assistance of the BUD web application uploads and downloads can be done from any TN3270 client.
View a walkthrough of downloading AIS files with a TN3270 client.
VPN (Virtual Private Network) Software
Required for establishing a secure connection to WSU network resources and servers.
