Information Technology Services (ITS) is implementing a systemwide update to WSU’s GlobalProtect Virtual Private Network (VPN) on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025, from 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
Sign-Out Recommended
To ensure a smooth reconnection after the update, please sign out of the WSU VPN:
- Open the GlobalProtect application on your device.
- In the top right of the application, select the hamburger icon (three horizontal bars).
- Select the Settings option.
- In the bottom left of the window, select the Sign Out button.
- In the pop-up requesting you to confirm the sign-out, select the Yes button.
ITS recommends signing out of the VPN before this maintenance window begins. If unable to, please sign out and sign back in anytime after this maintenance window concludes to minimize any potential connection issues.
Scheduled VPN Outage
ITS is reserving the entire maintenance window for this work. WSU VPN services may be unavailable for up to one hour during this time, and users may be unable to access systems that require VPN.
Unified VPN Portal
Effective Dec. 18, the following campus-specific VPN portals will no longer function:
- vpn.everett.wsu.edu (WSU Everett)
- sslvpn.spokane.wsu.edu (WSU Spokane)
- vpn.vancouver.wsu.edu (WSU Vancouver)
- vpn.tricity.wsu.edu (WSU Tri-Cities)
All campuses will use the vpn.wsu.edu portal for WSU VPN services.
Expected Impact
WSU VPN users who attempt to connect via the listed campus portals on or after Dec. 18 may encounter errors or failed connections.
Required Action
Following this update, users must re-authenticate to access the VPN. When prompted for a portal address, enter vpn.wsu.edu and select Connect. Please use your WSU credentials to sign in and establish a secure connection.
IP Address Changes
Effective Dec. 18, users will be assigned new internal and public Internet Protocol (IP) addresses when connecting to the VPN service.
- Internal IP Addresses: Determine which WSU systems you can access.
- Public IP Addresses: Used by external systems to identify and allow WSU traffic.
Expected Impact
For most WSU VPN users, this change will not impact routine VPN use or access to general university systems.
However, some WSU VPN users who access specialized systems that utilize the current IP addresses to grant access may experience temporary disruptions until those systems are updated to accept the new IP addresses.
Required Action
Following this update, WSU VPN users are encouraged to monitor the systems they typically use for any connection issues.
If you experience unexpected access issues while connected to WSU VPN services on or after Dec. 18, please contact your local IT support team for assistance.
ITS has provided local IT support teams a list of impacted IP addresses and their new configurations for each WSU campus. With this information, support teams can help departments or external vendors update IP-based access lists or whitelists to maintain or restore access.
