New MFA Selection Prompt, 3/11

Starting Tuesday, March 11 at 12 p.m., WSU users with only SMS (text) and Voice Call configured for multi-factor authentication (MFA) will receive a new prompt during the login process. An example of the prompt is provided below:

Between March 11 and March 25, users will be prompted to select their preferred MFA method. After making their selection, they can continue accessing WSU services using SMS or Voice Call MFA until these options are removed. Users may delay this selection by one day to allow additional time to choose the best method for their needs; the option to delay will reset daily.

When users select their preferred MFA method, they will be automatically added to an Okta Managed Group. As members of this group, they will receive one final opportunity to use SMS or Voice Call for MFA at their next login attempt on or after March 25. Immediately after confirming their final phone-based code, they will be required to enroll in their selected MFA method.

Early selection of a preferred MFA method helps prepare impacted users for the upcoming removal of SMS and Voice Call and allows Information Technology Services (ITS) to require MFA enrollment instead of locking user accounts starting March 25. This changes the expected failure mode from users being unable to access their account to users experiencing difficulties onboarding their selected MFA method, which allows Crimson Service Desk to provide support via phone call or email and no longer requires visual verification.
