Implement Palo Alto Zone Protection, 3/24

Please see the following scheduled Information Technology Services (ITS) maintenance process:

Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2026

Start Time: 8 p.m.

End Time: 10 p.m.

The following work is being completed: ITS is implementing Palo Alto zone protection profiles on campus border firewalls. Zone protection is a standard Palo Alto Networks security feature used to protect network infrastructure from abuse and common network‑based attacks while preserving service availability.

All affected groups:

  • Users accessing WSU network resources
  • WSU technical support staff managing systems that traverse campus border firewalls

All affected processes:

  • Network traffic entering or exiting protected firewall zones will be subject to additional security inspection.
  • Legitimate network traffic is expected to continue normally.
  • Malicious or non‑compliant network traffic may be rate‑limited or dropped as part of normal security enforcement.

Duration of impact: This is a permanent, security‑driven change. No sustained service outages are expected; however, brief and intermittent connectivity interruptions may occur during the change window.

Necessary follow-up steps:

  • No action is required for most WSU users.
  • IT staff supporting specialized applications or non‑standard network traffic should monitor services during and after the change window.
  • Report any unexpected connectivity issues to Crimson Service Desk.
