Please see the following scheduled Information Technology Services (ITS) maintenance process:
Date: Wednesday, March 25, 2026
Start Time: 8 p.m.
End Time: 11:59 p.m.
The following work is being completed: To counter the risk of large‑scale email distribution from compromised accounts, ITS is reducing the maximum number of recipients allowed per outbound message for WSU senders.
All affected groups: WSU users that send email to large numbers of recipients
All affected processes: ITS will implement a limit of 500 individual recipients per message. This will not impact the existing daily sending limit of 5,000 emails.
Duration of impact: This is a permanent change.
Necessary follow-up steps: ITS is compiling a list of WSU mailboxes that regularly send emails to more than 500 individual recipients. ITS will use this list to create an exception group and allow valid senders to continue current email practices.
- Before Implementation Date: Individuals or units who expect to exceed the new recipient limit must submit a ticket to Crimson Service Desk, provide the email address of the sending mailbox, and request an exception.
- After Implementation Date: Individuals or units who encounter sending errors due to the new recipient limit can submit a ticket to Crimson Service Desk. ITS will review the sending mailbox and apply an exception as appropriate.
Additional information:
- This change does not impact emails sent through third-party communications services or tools.
- Recipient types such as Mailman listservs, contact groups, and Exchange distribution lists count as one recipient even if they distribute email to more than 500 contacts.
- Users who are uncertain if this change will impact their email practices are encouraged to contact Crimson Service Desk for escalated support.
