Security Incident Notice: Canvas Learning Management System

Review a WSU and ITS leadership update to this university-wide announcement: Canvas Service Update

Dear WSU Community,

WSU Information Technology Services is aware of a nationwide security incident involving Canvas, our Learning Management System, operated by Instructure. We are actively monitoring updates from Instructure and assessing any impact to university services.

This is a vendor-driven, nationwide event affecting multiple institutions. Instructure has taken Canvas offline while they address the situation. We will provide updates as new information becomes available.

We recognize the timing of this disruption is particularly challenging as we approach the end of the semester. Faculty, students, and staff are encouraged to consider the following interim approaches to support continuity:

Grade submission: Faculty unable to submit grades through Canvas should contact their department or college registrar’s office for guidance on alternative submission options.

Course materials and assignments: Faculty may share materials directly with students via email or through other university-supported platforms such as Microsoft Teams or OneDrive.

Communication: WSU email and Microsoft Teams remain available for direct communication between faculty and students regarding any changes to deadlines, expectations, or course requirements.

Final exams and assessments: Faculty and students should work together to identify alternative formats or timelines for any Canvas-dependent assessments that cannot be completed during the outage. Students are encouraged to communicate proactively with their instructors, and faculty should contact their department chair if additional guidance is needed.

We appreciate the patience and flexibility of our entire university community during this time. Please reach out to the Crimson Service Desk or your college’s IT support contacts with any technical questions.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
