New Microsoft Feature: Custom Name for OneDrive Sync Folder

The following work is being completed: Microsoft has introduced a feature that allows WSU Microsoft administrators to set a custom local OneDrive sync folder name on Windows.

All affected groups:

  • Microsoft administrators managing OneDrive sync policies
  • New and existing users with OneDrive sync on Windows configured

All affected processes:

  • WSU Microsoft administrators can set a custom name for the local OneDrive sync root folder on users’ Windows devices using the new Set a Custom Name for the OneDrive Folder policy (String ID CustomSyncRootFolderName).
  • New users will automatically see custom folder names when they configure OneDrive sync.
  • Existing users must unlink and relink their OneDrive account to see new folder names.
  • The display name shown in File Explorer’s navigation pane and the OneDrive Activity Center remains unchanged.

Duration of impact: This is a permanent, Microsoft-driven change.

Necessary follow-up steps: The feature is opt-in and requires Microsoft administrator configuration to enable.

Additional information:

  • Custom folder names must meet the following requirements:
    • Contain at least one character
    • Cannot be named “OneDrive”
    • Full folder path must not exceed 120 characters
    • Standard Windows folder naming rules apply
