GitHub Copilot Interaction Data Usage Policy

Beginning April 24, 2026, GitHub will begin automatically using data from personal GitHub Copilot Free, Pro, or Pro+ plans to train and improve its AI models unless users explicitly opt out.

This change does not apply to GitHub Copilot Business and GitHub Copilot Enterprise plans.

For users working with WSU‑owned or sponsored code, please be aware that use of GitHub Copilot is approved only through WSU‑managed Copilot Business or Enterprise licenses. Personal GitHub Copilot Free, Pro, or Pro+ plans may not be used with institutional code unless AI training is disabled and written approval has been obtained in advance.

WSU encourages users accessing Copilot within GitHub to:

  • Check which GitHub Copilot plan they are using in their licensing settings
  • Review their current GitHub Copilot data‑sharing settings
  • Decide whether they want to take action based on their individual use and preferences

If an eligible Copilot plan is in use and no action is taken, GitHub may use certain Copilot interaction data for its AI training processes. Eligible interaction data may include:

  • Prompts and inputs sent to GitHub Copilot
  • Accepted or modified Copilot-generated outputs
  • Code context near the cursor position
  • File names, repository structure, and navigation patterns
  • Comments and documentation
  • Copilot chat interactions and inline suggestions
  • Thumbs up/down feedback on Copilot suggestions

Users who decide they do not want their Copilot interaction data used for AI training in GitHub must manually opt out by updating their GitHub account settings.
