The following work is being completed: Microsoft has removed the no-cost Copilot Chat feature in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for users without a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
All affected groups: Users without a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license
All affected processes:
- Copilot Chat is no longer available to access directly within the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote applications.
- Copilot Chat remains available via the web and in Outlook.
- Microsoft has added in-product labels to help end-users and administrators identify their user experience:
- “Copilot Chat (Basic)”: Users without a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license
- “M365 Copilot (Premium)”: Users with a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license
Duration of impact: This is a permanent, Microsoft-driven change.
Necessary follow-up steps: None. If users require Copilot functionality in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, departments may purchase paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses. Paid add-on licenses may be purchased for WSU faculty, administrative professional employees, and civil service employees.
