Out-of-Band Update for Cloud‑Backed Storage Application Issues

Microsoft released an out‑of‑band (OOB) update to address several issues identified after the deployment of the January 2026 Windows security update. These issues include:

  • Applications becoming unresponsive or displaying errors when opening or saving files stored in cloud‑backed locations
  • Installations of Outlook becoming unresponsive and failing to open when PST files are stored in cloud‑backed storage such as OneDrive.
    • Please Note: ITS strongly recommends storing PST files locally rather than in OneDrive or other cloud‑backed locations to help ensure the best performance and reliability in Outlook.

This new OOB update includes all protections from the January 2026 Windows security update and incorporates earlier fixes for remote desktop connection issues and hibernation failures (as described in the notification below).

Install via Windows Update

The OOB update is available through Windows Update for Windows 11 devices running the January 2026 updates. It will appear in Windows Update only on devices that previously installed one of the impacted updates.

To install it, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Download and Install. Some devices may install the update automatically.
