Classic Teams End of Availability for Windows and macOS, 10/23

Microsoft revised the availability schedule for classic Teams on Windows and macOS to ensure the successful application of future security updates and encourage users to transition to a supported Teams client for continued service use.

Classic Teams End of Availability

Starting Oct. 23, 2024, the classic Teams desktop application will no longer be accessible on devices running the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7, 8, and 8.1
  • macOS Sierra (10.12), High Sierra (10.13) and Mojave (10.14)

Also, effective July 1, 2025, classic Teams will no longer be accessible on devices running Windows 10 or macOS Big Sur (11) or older.

Following this schedule, WSU users on these systems will experience non-dismissible in-app notifications informing them of the end of availability, and the classic desktop version of Teams will become inaccessible.

Transition to New Teams Desktop App

Although classic Teams will remain accessible on the operating systems listed above for a limited period, Information Technology Services (ITS) strongly recommends that WSU users transition to the new Teams desktop application as soon as possible for the best user experience.

At this time, new Teams for desktop requires macOS Monterey (12) or higher or Windows 10 version 10.0.19041 for installation. Users can confirm their device’s operating system using the following resources:

On a supported device and operating system, WSU users can switch to the new Teams experience by opening the Teams desktop application and enabling the Try the new Teams toggle in the upper-left corner.

New Teams Web App

To continue using Teams, any users unable to update their device to an operating system that supports either the classic or new desktop version of Teams can access the new Teams web app via a supported web browser.
