How do I install Office 365 ProPlus?

How many computers/devices can I install the Office 365 ProPlus programs on?

Can I install Office 365 ProPlus on my home computer/personal devices?

Yes, you can install Office 365 Pro Plus on your work computer and home computer/personal devices.

Will I be required to install Office 365 ProPlus on my work computer?

No. Installation of Office 365 Pro Plus is completely optional. If you already have Office installed on your system, you may wish to keep that installation in lieu of installing Office 365 Pro Plus.

Will I have access to Office Online?

Yes, you can login to office365.wsu.edu and access the Office products online on the website from within your web browser. Office products available online are: Word, OneNote, PowerPoint, and Excel, with access to your OneDrive storage. (The Office Online versions of these applications may not have all the advanced features of the installed applications.) Browsers supported are: Edge, IE 10 or later, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. Additional tools available online are: Sway, Class Notebook (add-on to OneNote), and Forms.

Will my installed Office products update automatically?

As a subscription service, updates to the various applications will occur on a regular basis to allow you to stay up-to-date with the most current versions.

What happens when I leave WSU?

Because the Office 365 ProPlus subscription must be associated with an active user account, the Office desktop applications perform a routine check for user account status via the Internet. Office 365 ProPlus will be de-provisioned from your devices when you separate from WSU. (i.e. when you are no longer an active employee or enrolled student)

If I already have a version of Microsoft Office on my machine, will I need to uninstall it first before I install Office 365 ProPlus?

It won’t let you install the Office 2016 programs from the Office 365 ProPlus Subscription if you already have a regular copy of Office 2016 already installed. You may wish to back up your PST file and archive files for Outlook (the files all your email is in if you are using Outlook) prior to uninstalling the current version of Office from your machine. (Faculty and Staff can ask their local desktop support folks on how to do this. – Also, WSU Employees may need help from their local desktop support to install the software if they do not have local admin rights to their machines.)

What if I need Office 2013, or the 64-bit version of Office 2016?

The 32-bit version of Office 2016 is what is offered by default.

For Windows systems, you will have the option of installing 32-bit or 64-bit versions of the applications and can also choose to use Office 2016 or Office 2013 products. The decision rests on whether you currently use 64-bit versions (some third-party software may not work with the 64-bit versions) and/or whether you need to stay with Office 2013 again for compatibility with other applications you may need to run.

For Mac systems Office 2016 is all that is available.

What Office 365 applications are available by OS/device?

Can I use Office 365 applications in a Linux environment?

Yes, you can login to office365.wsu.edu and access the Office products online on the website from within your web browser

Unable to open a password protected or encrypted email attachment?

This problem occurs because the mail is being routed through Proofpoint. Proofpoint does not allow password protected attachments. You can work around this by renaming the attachment to an unknown extension before sending it. Once the attachment is received, the recipient can change the extension back to normal.

Office 365 Applications – Installation Instructions

Before you install

You will need to have sufficient free disk space and memory to install these applications, so you may need to do some housecleaning first.

Depending on how your University-owned systems are configured, you may need your departmental IT support staff to install these products on those machines.

The Office 365 ProPlus subscription does not include Visio or Project. These are available separately (as either a standalone version or subscription version) for Windows PCs.

There are options for departmental machines not directly associated with a single individual to use shared computer activation for Office 365 subscriptions. (These associated machines do not count against a user’s subscription limit of 5 PC’s etc.) There are also licensing options to license a specified device.

Currently, Office 365 uses the same application versions as Office 2016 standalone. If you stay with your standalone versions nothing really changes. If you move to Office 365 ProPlus you get Office 2016 versions but the system checks for valid active accounts, so you become locked into the Office 365 licensing scheme. So, you may opt to stick with your standalone versions. The benefit to Office 365 comes down the road when new versions are released you will automatically get the upgrades.

If you have Visio Pro or Project Pro, you may need to uninstall these to allow the Office 365 Click-to-Run Installer to install the Office 365 apps. Once those Office 365 apps are installed, you will need to re-install Visio Pro or Project Pro. Please see note below on comp ability between Visio / Project and Office 365.

InfoPath 2013 comes in 32-bit and 64-bit versions – if you need it, please install the correct version.

Updates to the Office 365 applications will occur regularly, and depending on what is included in the updates could occasionally be disruptive to operations.

Activation will occur on first use. You can use the Office 365 Portal to track your Installations on Windows and Mac systems, and can use that facility to deactivate an install. If you get a new computer, you may need to deactivate the old installation via the Office 365 Portal even if the new computer name is the same as the old one. (Click on the down arrow to the right of each computer name to determine the installation date on that machine.)
