Change notification for December Linux Production Patching

Please see the following scheduled Information Technology Services change process below.

Date: December 2, 2021
Start time: 7:00 PM
End time: Midnight

The following work is being completed: Linux systems managed by Information Technology Services will be updated to include newly released patches. As part of these updates, individual systems may need to be rebooted.

Groups affected: Entire WSU community

Duration of impact: Services may be unavailable for several minutes as servers are rebooted. Those services using redundant servers to provide additional availability should expect no user impact.

Processes or services affected: Processes that use ITS Linux services, including smtp.wsu.edu, Shibboleth authentication, ITS monitoring (zabbix), Splunk services, and the University communications web servers (www.wsu.edu and others) may be impacted.

Follow-up steps: None.

Contact: Issues should be routed through the Crimson Service Desk (crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu or 509-335-4357)

Urgent Border Firewall Upgrades Dec 1 & Dec 2

Please see the following Information Technology Services (ITS) scheduled maintenance:

Multiple Dates:

  • Wednesday, December 1 – 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
    • Pullman Border
  • Thursday, December 2nd – 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
    • Spokane Border
    • Yakima Border
    • SBDC Border
    • iReach Border
    • TriCities Border
    • Vancouver Border
    • Everett Border

The following work is being completed:  ITS is upgrading Palo Alto firewalls for campuses across the state on the below schedule in order to address a security advisory:

Duration of impact for all locations:

  •  Pullman Border, Yakima Border, and iReach Border will experience multiple failovers due to this being a major upgrade for these firewalls.  The failover will cause a one to two-second delay in traffic each time, possibly affecting very sensitive jobs.
  • Spokane Border Firewall | An outage of approximately 5 minutes is experienced for each failover, but the entire maintenance window is reserved for this work.  There will be two failovers as part of this maintenance.
  • Spokane SBDC Firewall | Due to not having a high availability pair, the outage will be approximately 30 minutes while the single firewall reboots.  However, the entire maintenance window is reserved for this work.

All processes affected: The failovers will cause a one to two-second delay in traffic each time, possibly affecting very sensitive jobs.

Follow up steps customers need to take: None

Splunk Universal Forwarder Client Downgrade to 7.3.9

Please see the following Information Technology Services notice:

Date:  11/23/2021
Start Time: 6 pm PST
End Time: N/A

The following work is being completed: Tier 1 SCCM Deployment and Downgrade of all Windows 2012 R2 and earlier Splunk Universal Forwarder clients to Version 7.3.9.  This downgrade is necessary due to an OS incompatibility with Splunk Universal Forwarder client versions beyond 7.3.9.

All affected groups:  All Tier 1 SCCM connected Windows 2012 R2 and earlier machines not previously excluded from SCCM based Splunk deployment.

Duration of impact:  ITS will be deploying the Splunk Client on Tuesday, November 23rd at 6pm.

All processes affected:  No outages are expected.  The Universal Forwarder client will resume where it left off, once the installation is complete.  All other installations of the current 8.1.1 client version will be unaffected.

Follow up steps customers need to take:  None

All affected groups: All Domain Users including MGTHUB, Riverpoint, Vetmed, and AD.WSU.EDU domains.

Duration of impact: We do not anticipate any major impact during this window except for potential short outages for services that do not utilize the redundant nature of Active Directory for high availability.

Follow up steps customers need to take: None

For technical assistance: For any questions, please contact Crimson Service Desk via email crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu, by phone at (509) 335-4357, or online http://crimsonservicedesk.wsu.edu/

All affected groups: All WSU Pullman-hosted voicemail boxes with Single Inbox (voicemail forwarded to email) configured

Duration of impact: Less than 2 hours

Follow-up steps customers need to take: If a customer believes a voicemail was not forwarded from their inbox following completion of the maintenance, they can log into their phone to check for messages, or log in to https://voicemail.wsu.edu to check their inbox.

Additional Info: Voicemails received during the maintenance should be sent to email when the system resyncs with Office 365 upon completion. Otherwise, no user impact is anticipated.

SSH/FTP/PPTP Changes Coming January 4

Please see the following Information Technology Services (ITS) maintenance:

Date: Tuesday, January 4, 2022
Start Time: 8:00 p.m.
End Time: 8:30 p.m.

The following work is being completed: To improve security, ITS will be removing applications SSH, FTP, and PPTP from the default Inbound Application Allow list.  The Area Technology Officers (ATOs) on the Pullman campus have been provided reports of traffic that will stop working after this maintenance is complete.  Information for requesting exceptions is listed below under ?Steps to take ahead of time?.  A simplified version of that report for August 2-October 3 is also attached where each destination host has a single entry (versus each unique source/destination combination).  Each protocol has one tab of traffic observed and one tab for exceptions already implemented.

All affected groups: WSU Pullman

Duration of Impact: The removal is expected to take less than 5 minutes.  This is a permanent change.  Only SSH, FTP, and PPTP traffic will be allowed inbound to hosts on the exception list for each protocol.

All Processes Affected: Inbound SSH, FTP, and PPTP traffic which has not already been given an exception.

Steps to take ahead of time: Customers who have systems which need inbound SSH, FTP, and PPTP access need to fill out the firewall request form to request an exception (https://itsforms.wsu.edu/NetworkOperations/FirewallRequest.aspx) with the needed protocol(s) specified.  If there are a large number of exception requests, those can be emailed to its.nea@wsu.edu with the protocol(s) needed listed with each host.

Follow-up steps customers need to take: If a service stops working and an exception was not requested, customers will need to request an exception following the steps listed above.

For technical assistance: For any questions, please contact Crimson Service Desk via email crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu, by phone at (509) 335-4357, or online http://crimsonservicedesk.wsu.edu/
